The hognose is easily one of my favorite snakes because it acts so tough and mean but hardly ever bites anyone.  They are known as being great bluffers.  This one individual hissed at us, puffed up, flattened out its neck, and even struck at us a lot but once we went down to pick it up it just stayed in a threatening posture with his mouth open and never really tried to bite.  However, after you pick them up and they realize that you aren't scared of them, they just flip right over and play dead.  Then if you try to put them back on their stomach they'll turn over again and again.  So don't start handling them until after you are finished taking pictures of them from the top or you'll only get pictures of their bellies for the rest of the roll.
